Prior experience at similar scale: A developer who's built systems handling 100,000 daily active users is more likely to succeed building a system for 50,000 users than someone whose largest project had 10,000 users. It's not about language or framework; it's about having solved scale problems before.

Specific technology stack experience: A developer good with PostgreSQL isn't automatically good with MongoDB, and vice versa. If your project needs one, hiring someone experienced with the other is a risk.

Architectural pattern expertise: Microservices, monoliths, event-driven, CQRS — these are different architectural styles. A developer might be excellent at one and not understand the others. Screening for the specific pattern you need matters.

Security and compliance awareness: If you're handling payment data, health information, or customer PII, hire someone who's worked in regulated environments before. Security hygiene varies dramatically between developers.

Team integration understanding: Can they work in a team? Do they document their decisions? Do they ask questions? Backend work that's done in isolation creates problems when other developers need to use the API or modify the code.

The companies doing this well invest 2–4 weeks in hiring (not 2 days). They involve their tech lead or architect in vetting. They do the architectural assessment. They talk to references who worked with the candidate on similar problems.

This takes more time upfront. It saves months of rework and architectural debt later.
