Sirene Abou-Chakra Appointed to Arab American Institute National Policy Council

Washington, D.C., USA, August 23rd, 2026, FinanceWire

The Arab American Institute (AAI) has appointed technology and public policy executive Sirene Abou-Chakra to its National Policy Council, marking a powerful new chapter in her lifelong mission to expand Arab American representation, strengthen civic power and turn community advocacy into lasting policy change.

Abou-Chakra’s path to national policy leadership began in Dearborn, Michigan, where she marched alongside her family for civil rights and traveled to Washington to advocate for Arab American communities. She went on to build a distinguished career across technology and public service, holding leadership roles at Google, Dataminr, Airbnb and the City of Detroit.

“Joining the National Policy Council is not about symbolism. It is about turning representation into results,” Abou-Chakra explained. “Arab Americans deserve to be accurately counted, fully represented, protected by our civil rights institutions and meaningfully included in the decisions shaping this country.”

As a member of the council, Sirene Abou-Chakra will advocate for stronger voting rights protections, greater Arab American representation in government and institutional leadership, and safeguards against discriminatory surveillance and civil liberties violations. She will also support the effective implementation of the new Middle Eastern or North African, or MENA, category across federal data collection.

Abou-Chakra said her work will remain firmly focused on creating structural progress that extends beyond any single political moment.

“I want the next generation to inherit real wins, stronger institutions and more opportunities to lead,” Abou-Chakra said. “Our young people should be able to see a clear path into government, public policy, journalism, education, technology and every other place where decisions are made.”

Throughout her career, Abou-Chakra has built high-performing teams, developed public-private partnerships and transformed complex systems into measurable results. She now brings that experience to the National Policy Council as it works to advance the priorities and protect the rights of Arab Americans nationwide.

“This appointment represents both where I come from and where I believe our community is going,” Abou-Chakra shared. “Arab Americans have always contributed to the strength of this country. Our voices, experiences and leadership belong at every table where America’s future is being shaped.”
