Mate Security, Palo Alto Networks, and ServiceNow Support OpenAI’s Call for a New Era of Cyber Defense

A hospital that cannot afford to take its systems offline has little room for error when a cyberattack arrives. The same is true for a water utility, local government or the infrastructure supporting internet services. As artificial intelligence gives attackers new capabilities, these organizations may need a fundamentally different approach to defending systems that cannot simply be disconnected or rebuilt.

That challenge is central to a new initiative from OpenAI, which is calling on the technology and cybersecurity industries to accelerate the use of artificial intelligence for defensive purposes. Their participation places the three companies among the market leaders supporting OpenAI's initiative, while highlighting different approaches to the future of security.

The Critical Infrastructure Problem

OpenAI's letter identifies critical infrastructure as one of the areas where the need for stronger cyber defense is most urgent.

Hospitals, water treatment facilities and other essential services frequently operate under constraints that are fundamentally different from those faced by conventional enterprises. Systems may be difficult to patch, downtime can have immediate consequences, and security teams may lack the resources needed to address every vulnerability.

Meanwhile, attackers are gaining access to increasingly capable AI.

"We have a limited window to strengthen cyber defenses," OpenAI wrote.

The company's concern is that the existing security status quo will not be enough to withstand the next generation of AI-enabled attacks.

AI As a Defensive Force Multiplier

The proposed response is to give defenders greater access to AI capabilities.

OpenAI is asking organizations to make cyber defense an immediate leadership priority and use AI to improve security coverage. It also recommends applying more advanced AI capabilities to difficult security problems while using lower-cost models for broader defensive tasks.

For cybersecurity companies, the letter calls for continuous testing against frontier cyber capabilities, AI-enhanced security tools and hands-on assistance for critical infrastructure operators.

The emphasis on deployment is important. OpenAI is not simply advocating more research into AI security. It wants organizations to put defensive systems into production and verify that they actually work.

ServiceNow And the Constraints of Essential Services

ServiceNow's participation points to a third dimension of the same problem.

The organizations at the centre of the letter often cannot fix a vulnerability the moment it is identified. Patching may require a maintenance window that a hospital or utility can rarely afford, and remediation typically has to be scheduled, approved and coordinated across teams that extend well beyond security.

OpenAI's emphasis on verification makes that process consequential. The letter asks organizations to confirm that fixes actually work and to measure progress by how quickly attacks are contained, which depends on how reliably remediation is tracked through to completion.

Together, the companies represent different sides of the same transformation: an established security platform incorporating increasingly capable technology, an emerging company building around agentic defense from the ground up, and an enterprise platform operating where security decisions are turned into completed work.

All three approaches may become increasingly important as organizations rethink security operations.

From AI Adoption to AI Accountability

OpenAI also recognizes that giving AI systems more autonomy creates new requirements around accountability.

The letter calls for frontier AI companies to ensure that "agentic identities are traceable and accountable" and to invest in authorized testing, private disclosure and verified fixes.

That focus on accountability may become one of the defining issues in agentic cybersecurity. Organizations will need to know not only what an AI system recommends, but what it did, why it acted and whether its actions produced the intended result.

OpenAI's broader message is that the cybersecurity industry has an opportunity to act before AI-enabled attacks reach their next stage.

With the companies among the initiative's first-day signatories, the message has already attracted support from established market leaders and from companies developing the next generation of agentic defense. The next test will be turning that collective commitment into systems capable of protecting the infrastructure people depend on every day.
