Indonesia Specialty Coffee Exports 57.6 Tonnes of Royal Gayo Coffee to Kuwait

Indonesia Specialty Coffee (ISC) a green coffee exporter and trading company based in Medan, North Sumatra, has shipped 57.6 tonnes of Royal Gayo coffee from Aceh Gayo to Kuwait.

The shipment travelled in three 20-foot containers carrying a combined 960 bags. ISC said the export represents the next step in its effort to strengthen the position of Indonesian specialty coffee in international markets and develop a long-term trade relationship with buyers in Kuwait and the wider Middle East.

Three Containers Depart Through Belawan

Each container carried 320 bags weighing 60 kilograms each. The consignment departed through the Port of Belawan, a major export gateway for coffee produced in Sumatra.

ISC said every shipment sample is cupped and graded by trained Q Graders and its quality-control team before export. The company operates a specialty coffee processing plant in Takengon, Central Aceh, and owns or manages 75 hectares of processing sites.

The exported product, Royal Gayo, is a specialty-grade Arabica sourced from producing areas across Central Aceh, including Takengon and Bener Meriah. The coffee is grown at elevations of approximately 1,200 to 1,700 metres above sea level.

The lot shipped to Kuwait received a cupping score of 82.75 using the older 2004 Specialty Coffee Association 100-point cupping methodology. ISC states that its Aceh Gayo Grade 1 green beans are prepared at screen sizes from 15 to 19, with moisture content of no more than 13 percent and a maximum defect value of 11.

Quality Preparation and Export Inspection

ISC processes coffee using methods that may include semi-washed, fully washed, wet-hulled and dry-hulled preparation, depending on the required specification. The company said these methods influence body, acidity, clarity and flavour characteristics in the finished cup.

Before departure, the shipment was inspected by Badan Karantina Indonesia at Belawan and received a Phytosanitary Certificate. ISC said the inspection process included sampling, laboratory testing and confirmation that the consignment met applicable destination requirements.

Food imports arriving in Kuwait remain subject to clearance by the country’s Public Authority for Food and Nutrition.

Support for Repeat Orders

ISC said the shipment is supported by the Government of Indonesia and a partner financial institution through a freight-support facility for qualifying repeat orders from existing buyers in Kuwait.

According to the company, the facility may cover shipping costs for eligible buyers ordering the same coffee quality during the next 12 months. Eligibility, order requirements and complete terms are confirmed directly with ISC at the time of purchase.

The company said the programme is intended to support continuity of supply and encourage longer-term commercial relationships rather than one-off transactions.

Plans for Regional Stock

ISC is also evaluating the establishment of ready stock in Kuwait or another Gulf market within the next one to three years.

The proposed regional stocking model would allow qualified buyers to draw from inventory held closer to the destination market rather than waiting for every order to depart from Belawan. ISC said this could shorten lead times and make smaller, more frequent orders more practical.

The timing of any regional stocking point will depend on order volume, demand consistency and operational requirements over the coming year.

Building a Long-Term Middle East Trade Lane

ISC said Kuwait is being developed as a long-term market for Indonesian specialty coffee. The company expects consistent product quality, reliable seasonal supply and continued engagement with buyers to support broader expansion across the Middle East.

The Indonesian Trade Promotion Center network also supports international trade development by providing market information, buyer inquiries, business matching and trade-cooperation assistance in accredited markets.

ISC has supplied Indonesian coffee to buyers in more than 50 countries and lists Dubai and the wider Middle East among its expansion priorities.
