Uncertainties weigh on the Swiss automobile market
In April 2025, the new car market in Switzerland and Liechtenstein recorded a year-on-year decline of 6.9%, with only 18,664 registrations. The year-to-date total shows a decline of 7.6%. This negative trend persists despite hopes of a catch-up effect. Various factors, including tougher CO₂ targets and the lack of incentives for electric mobility, continue to hamper purchases.
Peter Grünenfelder, President of Auto-Suisse, advocates for a favorable economic framework to support the automotive sector. Despite this negative trend, sales of electric cars are showing encouraging signs, with a 9.5% increase compared to the previous year. Their market share reached 18.6% in April. Young people are showing growing interest in these vehicles, but policies still need to be adjusted to encourage this investment and avoid disruptive regulation.
