U-blox GNSS Enables Sub-Nanosecond Synchronization for SETI Telescope Array
u-blox AG has announced that its ZED-F9T GNSS receiver is instrumental in achieving sub-nanosecond synchronization for the PANOSETI project. This initiative aims to detect potential extraterrestrial signals via an optical telescope array. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, and other institutions are involved. The project requires precise synchronization among widely distributed telescopes.
The ZED-F9T allows for synchronization without the need for costly fiber infrastructure, instead using GNSS-based timing. This method achieved a standard deviation of ~0.7 nanoseconds over a 1 km baseline, which can improve to ~200 picoseconds with additional filtering. Such precision meets the needs of next-generation sensing systems.
GNSS timing offers high precision in environments lacking infrastructure, proving beneficial for scientific research and other remote applications. The collaboration marks a significant advancement in distributed instrumentation, supporting innovation in various sectors. u-blox remains at the forefront of this technological shift.
