The Impact of Digital Payment on Tipping in Switzerland

A ZHAW study commissioned by Bank Cler reveals that digitalization is influencing tipping practices in Switzerland. Although 69% of customers still prefer cash for tips, the use of digital payments is increasing, particularly among young people. However, concerns about the fair distribution of digital tips persist.

Young people, in particular, are less generous, primarily for financial reasons. Indeed, 72% of those over 50 almost always leave a tip, compared to only 43% of those aged 18-29. However, 26% of young people say they tip more than before, thanks to an improvement in their financial situation.

Finally, the study highlights the importance of clarity and freedom in choosing the tip amount, thus promoting a pleasant and non-binding process for customers.
