Swiss Re Reports USD 80 Billion in Insured Losses in H1 2025

Global insured losses reached USD 80 billion in the first half of 2025, according to the Swiss Re Institute. This is nearly double the ten-year average, driven by the largest-ever wildfire losses in California, totaling USD 40 billion, and severe thunderstorms with USD 31 billion in losses. The increasing threat of wildfires is tied to higher temperatures and expanding residential areas in fire-prone regions.

Severe convective storms (SCS) remain a significant cause of insured losses despite lower impacts compared to previous years. Urban expansion in regions prone to natural disasters, along with rising asset values, intensifies financial implications. The remainder of the year holds uncertainty, with the North Atlantic hurricane season underway, and potential losses could surpass projections.
