Swiss car market lagging behind European developments
In June 2025, Switzerland recorded 21,810 new passenger car registrations, a decrease of 3.9% compared to the previous year. Over the first half of the year, with 113,133 vehicles, this represents a drop of 6.7%. Unlike the European Union, Switzerland has not yet harmonized its CO2 targets to stimulate the sector.
However, electric cars posted a notable increase of 14.2% in June, with 4,813 units sold. Despite a cumulative positive increase of 8.5%, this does not offset the decline in the overall market. European neighbors are seeing their registrations improve, benefiting from new, more flexible regulations.
It is essential for Switzerland to adopt similar measures to support its automotive industry, particularly in terms of taxation and the development of charging infrastructure.
