Shiga Prefecture Students to Perform in Austria
On November 5, 2026, seven students from Shiga Prefectural Ishiyama High School's music course will hold a concert at Joseph Haydn Private University in Burgenland, Austria. This initiative by the Shiga Prefectural Government aims to strengthen ties between Shiga, Japan, and Burgenland through music exchange. Students from Joseph Haydn Private University will also participate in the event.
The relationship between the regions began in 2021 due to a social media post noting the resemblance between Austria's shape and Lake Biwa. A memorandum of understanding was signed in 2023, promoting cultural exchanges, including joint performances, such as the one at EXPO 2025 in Osaka.
The partnership extends beyond music, with cycling trails named "Burgenland Road" in Shiga and "Shiga Cherry Blossom Cycling Path" in Burgenland to celebrate their connection.
