Shanghai Electric Advances Maritime Decarbonization with Biomethanol Bunkering
Shanghai Electric has successfully completed its first large-scale biomethanol bunkering at Shanghai's Yangshan Port. The operation, conducted on the container vessel CMA CGM OSMIUM, signifies the first major use of Chinese biomethanol by a global shipping leader. This development highlights Shanghai Electric's advancing role in green hydrogen and next-generation fuels.
The bunkering, coordinated by Shanghai International Port Group, utilized an efficient simultaneous loading and bunkering approach. The biomethanol used, produced at Shanghai Electric's Taonan project, promises a substantial reduction in lifecycle carbon emissions compared to traditional coal-based methanol.
Shanghai Electric’s Taonan facility represents China's initial large-scale commercial biomethanol operation, employing advanced technologies for sustainable production. The project supports the maritime industry’s shift towards low-carbon operations, providing a stable green fuel source.
