Shanghai Electric Enhances Iraq’s Power Capability with 625MW Upgrade

Shanghai Electric has initiated the Euphrates Combined Cycle Expansion Project in Iraq. Covering four governorates, this expansion aims to enhance the power output by 625MW, improving plant efficiency by 50% without additional fuel use. The project addresses Iraq’s enduring electricity shortages, projecting an annual increase of 5 billion kWh in electricity output.

The upgrade will significantly reduce Iraq's reliance on imported natural gas, leveraging advanced Chinese combined-cycle technology. The initiative marks a pivotal shift towards energy self-reliance, potentially supporting Iraq's economic recovery and infrastructure modernization.

Chinese and Iraqi teams collaborate on the project, utilizing locally produced high-temperature exhaust to drive new steam turbines, thereby enhancing electricity generation while decreasing thermal pollution.
