Post-Marathon Economic Impact Reveals "Racecation" Trend in Sanya
The Hainan (Sanya) Marathon, conducted at the close of 2025, marked a significant milestone as the first Class A-certified marathon by the China Athletics Association under the Hainan Free Trade Port's (FTP) unique customs rules. The event led to increased local tourism and business, with hotel occupancy at 92% and a 35% increase in commercial spending along the marathon route.
Orange Lion Sports, an event partner, utilized the Alibaba ecosystem to engage more participants. Hainan FTP's visa-free entry and expanded air connectivity increased international accessibility. An enhanced customs framework allowed duty-free import of race equipment, cutting event costs.
The marathon, coupled with New Year festivities, led to 650,800 visitors and RMB 1.299 billion in tourism spending, highlighting the new "racecation" phenomenon integrating sports and vacation.
