BORICA and OpenWay Honored for Euro Payments Transformation in Bulgaria

BORICA AD and OpenWay have been awarded the Best Partnership Initiative at the PAY360 Awards 2026. The accolade acknowledges their collective efforts in transforming Bulgaria's payment infrastructure, facilitating the nation's seamless transition to the euro. This initiative showcased their long-term partnership and its impact on maintaining uninterrupted card payments and ATM services from the outset of the euro adoption.

Since 2018, BORICA and OpenWay have collaborated to upgrade Bulgaria's card processing systems, integrating BORICA's national payment expertise with OpenWay's Way4 software platform. Their extensive preparation paid off when Bulgaria transitioned to the euro on January 1, 2026, handling over 930,000 transactions worth nearly €42 million within 48 hours without any unplanned downtime.

This project involved collaboration with over 35 banks, fintech firms, and government entities. Such coordinated efforts ensured the first successful euro ATM withdrawal occurred just 20 seconds into the new currency era.
