IDC Projects Significant Increase in OCP-Recognized Infrastructure Spending by 2029

The Open Compute Project (OCP) Foundation has announced a significant revision in IDC's forecast for worldwide spending on OCP-recognized IT infrastructure. According to the 2026 IDC Market Impact Study, spending is projected to reach $800 billion in 2029, a substantial increase from the previous $295 billion forecast.

This surge, primarily driven by increased AI investment and adoption, is expected to further reach $892 billion by 2030, with 51% of infrastructure spending attributed to OCP designs. AI's growing infrastructure demands highlight the importance of open designs in addressing these needs, as stated by Cliff Grossner, Chief Innovation Officer at OCP Foundation.

Investment in AI infrastructures and the corresponding adoption of OCP-recognized equipment are projected to expand substantially, as server spending leads with GPU-accelerated systems. The study also highlights growth in switching equipment and data center infrastructure to support complex workloads.
