Paulo Fonseca Departs Olympique Lyonnais for Sporting Portugal
On 4 November 2026, Olympique Lyonnais confirmed the departure of Paulo Fonseca as head coach to join Sporting Portugal. Fonseca, recently approached by Sporting, expressed his desire to leave, catching the club off guard mid-season. Despite the unexpected timing, OL acknowledged Fonseca's decision, concluding it wasn't beneficial to maintain a relationship potentially lacking in commitment.
The club is actively seeking Fonseca's successor, aiming for continuity with a candidate aligned with recent developments. In the interim, Jorge Maciel will oversee the team, leading them in upcoming matches including against Real Sociedad in the Europa League.
Sporting will provide €5 million in compensation for the contract's premature end. Olympique Lyonnais expressed gratitude towards Fonseca's contributions and wished him success in his new role.
