2026 International AI Safety Report Highlights Rapid Advancements and Emerging Risks
The 2026 International AI Safety Report, chaired by Turing Award-winner Yoshua Bengio, has been released today from Montreal. This report provides a science-based assessment of general-purpose AI's recent advancements, emerging risks, and current state of safeguards.
Key findings include significant improvements in AI capabilities, notably in mathematics and coding, with AI systems achieving remarkable feats, such as outperforming human experts in scientific benchmarks. Despite progress, uneven global adoption is noted, with less than 10% usage in regions like Africa and Latin America. Moreover, there is a rising trend in AI-related deepfakes used for scams and fraud, raising privacy concerns.
The report also warns of AI's misuse in biological weapon development and cyberattacks, emphasizing the need for stronger safeguards. Though some advancements are made, challenges in risk management persist.
