New Data Highlights Role of penKid in Kidney Therapy Decisions

Recent findings from a study involving 1,436 ICU patients reveal that proenkephalin A 119–159 (penKid) offers significant insights into kidney replacement therapy (KRT) management. Data published in the Annals of Intensive Care show penKid efficiently identifying patients at risk of KRT liberation failure, surpassing standard biomarkers.

This study, conducted at Heidelberg University Hospital, demonstrates penKid's ability to discern acute kidney injury (AKI) severity and support decision-making in KRT. Unlike serum creatinine, penKid differentiated patients requiring acute KRT from those with pre-existing kidney conditions.

The research underscores penKid's potential to standardize the decision-making process in critical care, providing clinicians with a measurable parameter to enhance kidney-related treatment decisions. As CEO Deborah Bergmann stated, penKid addresses a key clinical challenge by supplementing conventional markers.
