NanoViricides' NV-387 Advances to Phase II Clinical Trials Amidst Ebola Epidemic
NanoViricides, Inc. has gained approval to advance its NV-387 Oral Gummies into Phase II clinical trials for treating the Bundibugyo Ebolavirus in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This outbreak has spread to 782 cases with 181 fatalities, according to reports on June 14, 2026. NV-387's oral delivery format offers a significant advantage in resource-constrained settings like the DRC, contrasting with existing treatments requiring intravenous infusions, which are challenging to deploy in large outbreaks.
The Bundibugyo strain, suspected to be a new variant from an animal source, presents no existing treatments. NV-387 aims to leverage a broad-spectrum antiviral approach, potentially effective against not just Bundibugyo but other Ebola strains. The drug's mechanism, mimicking host cell features the virus needs, may prevent viral escape, unlike other treatments.
With the potential to effectively treat various Ebola strains, NV-387 could transform pandemic preparedness. The upcoming trial follows NanoViricides' collaborations and prior approvals for using NV-387 in Mpox treatment trials in DRC.
