Lenzing Unveils 14 MW Power-to-Heat Facility to Bolster Grid Stability
Lenzing AG has commissioned a new 14 MW power-to-heat (P2H) facility, aiming to enhance grid stability and improve heat management. This initiative, in collaboration with VERBUND, converts renewable electricity into process heat, marking a significant step towards a fossil-free heat supply. The P2H facility integrates into Austria's balancing energy market, helping stabilize the power grid by utilizing surplus renewable energy during periods of high wind and solar generation.
The facility's ability to absorb renewable power swiftly enhances the security of supply at Lenzing's site, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and cutting CO₂ emissions. It optimizes the use of low-cost renewable energy, aligning with industrial decarbonization goals. Lenzing oversaw the technical design and integration, while VERBUND contributes market expertise and infrastructure support.
Michael Strugl of VERBUND emphasized the project's role in demonstrating industry-energy sector collaboration potential, aiding in renewable energy optimization and secure supply.
