Kumho Mitsui Chemicals Launches Chlor-Alkali Plant with thyssenkrupp Technology
Kumho Mitsui Chemicals (KMCI) has commenced the operation of its chlor-alkali plant in Yeosu, South Korea, employing thyssenkrupp nucera's advanced e-BiTAC v7 electrolyzer technology. This development augments its Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) production capacity by utilizing locally produced chlorine, thus diminishing reliance on imports.
The new facility is projected to produce 60,000 tons of chlorine annually. It also incorporates a system for recycling by-product brine from MDI production, aligning with stringent environmental regulations and reducing effluent discharge. This strategic move further emphasizes KMCI's commitment to eco-friendly practices.
thyssenkrupp nucera initially supplied a pilot lab cell, confirming the technical feasibility of integrating waste brine in the chlor-alkali process. Awarded the EP contract in 2021, they designed and supplied the complete plant, which is a milestone in enhancing KMCI’s production processes and environmental responsibility.
