Kontron AG and Qualcomm Unite for 5G FRMCS Modem Development
On September 2, 2025, Kontron AG announced a collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. to create a next-generation 5G FRMCS modem for Europe’s MORANE 2 railway initiative. FRMCS aims to be the 5G standard for railway communications, customized to meet the industry's requirements across Europe.
The modem, based on the Snapdragon X72 5G Modem-RF System, offers high performance, energy efficiency, and reliability. It will operate on specific 5G railway frequency bands and assist in secure, high-speed communication for both passenger and operational services across European rail networks.
This collaboration is a key development towards enhancing railway connectivity in Europe, setting benchmarks for improved efficiency and safety in transportation systems.
