KlimaStaR Milk Initiative Paves Way for Sustainable Dairy Future
Lucerne, 8 October 2026 – The KlimaStaR Milk project, initiated by Emmi, Nestlé, and partners in 2022, has shown significant progress in making Swiss dairy farming more sustainable. Dairy farms have reduced the use of animal feed competing with human nutrition by 23%, surpassing the 20% target. Land competition has decreased by 15%, while milk production efficiency has improved. Greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of milk have dropped by 8%, although challenges remain due to the need for substantial investments and planning.
Dairy farms refined their systems to cut emissions per kilogram of milk by 66 grams of CO₂ equivalents in 2025, equivalent to nearly 5,000 tonnes less CO₂ for the entire sector compared to initial methods. As the project enters its final phase, farms will receive tailored guidance to further enhance reductions. The industry is poised to apply these practices nationwide, aided by a new climate calculator developed for Swiss milk producers. This initiative contributes to Switzerland's 2050 agricultural goals, emphasizing climate-friendly production and efficient resource use.
