Kedrion at ESID 2026: Experts Urge Early Diagnosis for Rising Secondary Immunodeficiencies
During the ESID 2026 conference in Maastricht, experts highlighted the growing challenge of Secondary Immunodeficiencies (SIDs), emphasizing early diagnosis and increased awareness as pivotal strategies. SIDs are becoming more clinically significant due to the escalating use of immunosuppressive treatments and the complexity of hematological diseases. Notably, these conditions often remain unidentified until late stages, leading to severe health impacts that could be prevented with timely intervention.
Johan Prevot from IPOPI and Dr. Silvia Sánchez-Ramón both stressed the need for stronger international collaboration and evidence-based practices to narrow awareness and diagnostic gaps. Gorana Dasic from Kedrion added that enhancing clinical management relies on multidisciplinary collaborations and a seamless blend of research and patient care.
Kedrion showcased initiatives like their MAPPA survey, highlighting patient experiences and diagnostic timelines across Europe. Preliminary results indicated significant diagnostic delays, with over half of patients diagnosed after age 18. This aligns with Alessandro Segato's assertion that patient experiences are pivotal for guiding improvements in diagnosis and care.
