International Mediation Organization Established in Hong Kong
The International Organization for Mediation (IOMed) was officially established on May 30, 2025, marking a notable step in international dispute resolution. Headquartered in Hong Kong, this is the first inter-governmental international legal organization focusing on mediation.
With participation from over 80 countries and about 20 international organizations, including the United Nations, the Convention on the Establishment of IOMed was signed by 33 countries. Wang Yi, a prominent member from China, highlighted the IOMed's role in advancing international legal frameworks.
John Lee, Chief Executive of Hong Kong, emphasized the city's pivotal role as a "super connector," asserting that the IOMed would foster peaceful resolutions amid geopolitical tensions. The organization's headquarters will occupy a refurbished historic site in Hong Kong by year-end.
