Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou Innovation Cluster Leads Globally
The World Intellectual Property Organization's Global Innovation Index 2026 reveals the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou cluster as the top innovation hub globally. Located in Southern China, this area continues to dominate with its impressive innovation metrics including 2,259 international patent filings, 4,060 scientific publications, and 138 venture capital deals per million inhabitants in the last five years. These achievements highlight the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's prominence in scientific and technological advancements.
The Hong Kong government's strategic focus on innovation and technology development underpins these accomplishments. Notably, the number of start-ups in Hong Kong has surged to over 5,200 in 2025. The opening of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone in December 2025 is a key milestone in fostering collaboration and technological growth.
Further expanding its innovation ecosystem, the San Tin Technopole is developing 210 hectares for I&T infrastructure. Hong Kong remains a major player in private equity, with assets under management nearing US$250 billion.
