Hong Kong Court Convicts Media Mogul Lai Chee-Ying of National Security Offenses

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's High Court convicted Lai Chee-ying and three of his companies on December 15, 2025. The charges include conspiring to endanger national security in violation of the Hong Kong National Security Law and Crimes Ordinance.

The court's detailed verdict spans 855 pages and is public. The defendants include Apple Daily Limited, among others. Sentencing is expected after further proceedings on January 12, 2026.

Hong Kong's Chief Executive, John Lee, criticized Lai for inciting social conflict and foreign interference. The conviction follows 156 days of hearings, evaluating extensive evidence.

Despite international scrutiny, Hong Kong officials emphasize the fair legal process and the continuous observance of freedom of the press under the Basic Law.
