Huawei Leads Path from Energy Consumer to Prosumer at Summit
The 10th Global ICT Energy Efficiency Summit in Vienna highlighted a shift in telecommunications. Huawei and partners stressed telecom sites transitioning from energy consumers to active prosumers, capable of generating and trading electricity. Virtual power plants are now pivotal.
Costs for co-located solar-plus-storage have dropped below $0.04 per kWh. In Europe, such deployments offer a three-year ROI and €800 annual site revenue, enhancing power availability and reducing diesel dependency. Energy is evolving from a cost to a strategic asset.
Operators face rising network dependency and energy uncertainty. Solutions include technology innovation and business-model shifts, leveraging AI and distributed energy resources. Aggregators are enhancing grid capacity through standardized and commercial models.
Early results are promising. In Portugal, critical services endured a blackout for 12 hours. In Southeast Asia, rural sites operated diesel-free for two years on solar power, proving prosumer viability.
