Honda Prize 2026 Honors Pioneers of Multichannel Cochlear Implant

The Honda Foundation has announced Professor Graeme M. Clark and Dr. Ingeborg Hochmair as joint recipients of the 2026 Honda Prize. They are recognized for their leadership in research and development of the multichannel cochlear implant. Professor Clark is a neuroscientist from the University of Melbourne, while Dr. Hochmair is the CEO of MED-EL. This award, Japan's first international science and technology prize, emphasizes the impact of their work on cochlear implants.

The multichannel cochlear implant, refined by Clark and Hochmair in the 1970s, surpasses earlier models by enabling more detailed sound perception, greatly enhancing speech understanding for recipients. Professor Clark initiated this research in 1967 and performed the first successful surgery in 1978. Dr. Hochmair advanced cochlear technology at the Technical University in Vienna before co-founding MED-EL.

The award ceremony will be held on November 16, 2026, in Tokyo, Japan, where both recipients will receive medals and a cash prize. Their work has significantly contributed to the lives of over a million individuals worldwide by restoring hearing, aiding language development, and improving life quality.
