Health Canada Approves Moderna's mRNA Vaccines for Flu and COVID-19
Health Canada has authorized Moderna's mFLUSIVA and mCOFLU vaccines for individuals over 50. mFLUSIVA is the first mRNA influenza vaccine in Canada, while mCOFLU is the first combined influenza and COVID-19 vaccine. Canada is the first to give such approval for both vaccines. The decision follows prior approvals in the U.S. and Europe for these vaccines.
The mFLUSIVA vaccine was evaluated through a Phase 3 study involving over 40,800 participants. It demonstrated higher efficacy compared to a standard-dose vaccine. mCOFLU also underwent rigorous testing, showing strong immune responses and an acceptable safety profile.
Moderna is collaborating with Canadian organizations to plan the deployment of these vaccines, aiming to reduce the health burden of influenza and COVID-19 in older adults. The vaccines remain under review in other markets.
