European Union supports Renewstable® Barbados project by HDF Energy
On 28 February 2025, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the European Investment Bank’s support for the Renewstable® Barbados project. The project, led by HDF Energy, aims to establish a green hydrogen power plant in Barbados. The aim is to contribute to achieving 100% renewable energy by 2030. Through the integration of solar energy and hydrogen storage, the project promises stable, non-intermittent electricity by replacing 13 MW of fossil fuel generation.
At an official ceremony, von der Leyen highlighted the importance of the project for the energy independence of the Caribbean. The EIB, alongside other financial institutions, is financially supporting the initiative with investment guarantees and grants. This plant, located in St. Philip, could serve as a model for other similar initiatives in the region.
