Hapag-Lloyd Invests in Methanol-Powered Fleet

Hapag-Lloyd has announced the construction of eight new dual-fuel methanol container ships, expected for delivery between 2028 and 2029. The investment in these vessels exceeds USD 500 million. This initiative is in collaboration with the shipyard CIMC Raffles.

The new ships, each with a capacity of 4,500 TEU, will feature modern dual-fuel methanol engines. This technology will render them 30% more efficient, potentially saving up to 350,000 metric tons of CO2e annually.

Hapag-Lloyd is also converting existing vessels to methanol propulsion and securing green methanol supply contracts, including a significant deal with Goldwind. The initiative supports the company's aim for fleet decarbonization by 2030 and achieving net-zero operations by 2045.
