Hapag-Lloyd Faces Challenging Q1 with Unfavorable Results

Hapag-Lloyd reported a disappointing financial outcome for Q1 2026. The company’s EBITDA fell to USD 494 million, with EBIT dropping to USD -157 million. Severe weather conditions and the Middle East conflict, notably the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, disrupted operations and affected the earnings, leading to a Group profit of USD -256 million.

Revenues in the Liner Shipping segment saw a decline to USD 4.8 billion, mainly due to lowered freight rates averaging USD 1,330/TEU. Despite the interruptions, transport volume stayed close to the previous year’s figures. In contrast, the Terminal & Infrastructure segment experienced a rise in revenues to USD 168 million, boosted by the consolidation of J M Baxi’s container business.

Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO, emphasized the continued focus on strategic goals and cost management amid the volatile market. While the outlook for 2026 remains cautious, the company is committed to maintaining service reliability through its Gemini network.
