Emerald Horizon Advances Molten Salt Storage Efficiency

Emerald Horizon AG, alongside Graz University of Technology, has made a breakthrough in molten salt storage technology. For the first time, their research demonstrates the efficient use of heat released during salt solidification, enhancing energy yield by up to six percent within the same storage volume.

The study highlights that the CALstore unit of the DUALstorePLUS system benefits from this innovation, equating to a significant mass saving. The findings were published in the journal “Energies” on October 13, 2026, marking a pivotal step in industrial energy storage solutions.

Dr. Mario J. Müller from Emerald Horizon emphasizes the untapped potential in using the heat of solidification in a controllable manner, enhancing the energy output. The system's robustness has been proven through over 200 operational cycles without corrosion or degradation issues.

The results will integrate into the thermal module of the DUALstorePLUS, which aligns with the industry’s shift towards decarbonization by providing on-demand renewable electricity and high-temperature heat.
