EDGX Demonstrates AI Satellite Computing with SpaceX Collaboration
Belgian spacetech company EDGX has initiated its first in-orbit demonstration of STERNA, an AI-powered edge computer, via the SpaceX Transporter-16 mission. STERNA aims to revolutionize satellite constellations with its ability to process data in space, avoiding dependence on ground infrastructure. It offers space-grade reliability and an operational lifespan of seven years.
STERNA employs NVIDIA-based computing to execute high-performance tasks, dynamically adjusting its power requirements between 10W and 45W. This capability allows satellites to move from data collectors to sophisticated decision-making systems, enhancing commercial, governmental, and defense operations.
By enabling real-time data processing in orbit, EDGX reduces latency and bandwidth usage, enhancing service delivery. This marks a significant stride for Europe's space-based computing, laying the groundwork for advanced AI applications directly in space.
