Collaboration to Innovate 4-Inch Aluminum Nitride Crystals

On June 26, 2025, a joint press release was issued by the Leibniz Institute for Crystal Growth (IKZ), PVA TePla AG, and Siltronic AG. These organizations are uniting to enhance aluminum nitride (AlN) crystal technology. The focus is on expanding AlN crystal sizes from 2 to 4 inches, targeting applications in power electronics and ultraviolet photonics.
The project aims to transition AlN crystal usage from research to industrial scale. AlN is distinguished by its exceptional properties, such as thermal conductivity and UV transparency, making it valuable for energy-efficient and compact power electronic and UV applications.
The initiative involves core competencies from each partner, emphasizing Europe's position in semiconductor materials. The alliance is expected to facilitate advancements in electromobility, renewable energies, and medical applications, asserting their commitment to technological sovereignty.
