CO2 Targets: Challenges and Sanctions for Auto-schweiz
Swiss car importers met their CO2 targets for passenger cars for the second consecutive year, with average emissions of 113.9 g CO2/km, exceeding the legal target of 118 grams. However, light commercial vehicles exceeded the 186-gram target by 6.4 grams, generating penalties of CHF 22.3 million. The overall market declined by 3.4%, but plug-in vehicles still accounted for 27.8% of the fleet.
By 2025, the sector must meet new, stricter thresholds: 93.6 g CO2/km for cars and 153.9 g CO2/km for light commercial vehicles. The declining share of electric vehicles compounds the challenge. Auto-schweiz is working to promote low-emission vehicles, with more than 200 electric models available. The long-term goal is to make the sanctions obsolete through a successful electric mobility ecosystem.
