CHAR Technologies Advances Thorold Facility to Commercial Biocarbon Production
CHAR Technologies Ltd. has completed the mechanical and electrical construction of Phase 1 at its Thorold Renewable Energy Facility. The facility, a joint venture with The BMI Group, will now commence commercial biocarbon production, marking its entry into generating revenue. The production is expected to scale up through the end of 2026, with the facility's Phase 1 designed for an annual output of up to 5,500 tonnes of biocarbon. ArcelorMittal Dofasco, among others, will utilize this biocarbon to replace fossil carbon in steelmaking.
Final approvals are awaited from the Electrical Safety Authority and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority to enable full-scale operations. Simultaneously, CHAR Technologies is preparing for Phase 2, which will feature additional equipment for renewable natural gas production. The project has received substantial funding from both the Ontario and Canadian governments, along with a significant investment from BMI Group.
