Career Changes Surge in Germany Amid Evolving Job Market
In Germany, career changes are gaining traction, as revealed by a Stepstone analysis of over 5.5 million job postings. The share of jobs welcoming career changers on Stepstone.de has surged more than sixfold since 2019, especially post-2025.
According to Stepstone's Hiring Trends Update, 87% of employees are open to switching fields if skills become outdated. More than 37% have sought jobs outside their current industry recently, with 59% actively seeking new challenges.
Fields like sales, logistics, and skilled trades are particularly receptive to career changers, valuing transferable skills over formal degrees. This trend is partly driven by a shortage of skilled workers, with 44% of recruiters facing hiring challenges.
Anna Wittich of Stepstone notes that demographic and economic changes are prompting companies to value potential and adaptability.
