Breda University Explores the Future of Urban Mobility Through Cycling

Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) has conducted research concerning the impact of light electric vehicles (LEVs) on urban mobility. As European Mobility Week concludes, this study highlights significant potential shifts within the Netherlands' renowned cycling infrastructure.

The research reveals that while LEVs like e-scooters and e-cargo bikes offer opportunities to reduce car usage, they introduce challenges regarding cycling safety. A quarter of nearly 2,000 surveyed residents express interest in adopting LEVs, potentially reducing car reliance. However, the diverse speeds of LEVs increase cycling accidents on shared paths.

BUas findings indicate that safety largely depends on user behavior rather than the vehicles. Legal measures such as speed control and infrastructure investments can maintain safety as new vehicle types integrate into the cycling network.
