Birkenstock Secures Legal Victory Against Lidl Over Copyright Infringement

In a notable ruling by the District Court of Gelderland in Arnhem, Birkenstock has triumphed in a copyright case against Lidl. The court has issued an injunction to halt Lidl from selling lookalikes of Birkenstock's iconic sandal models Arizona, Madrid, Gizeh, Boston, and Florida.

This landmark decision mandates Lidl to stop offering these sandals in the Netherlands, risking a penalty of €5,000 per day of non-compliance. Additionally, Lidl is required to provide a detailed sales report and compensate Birkenstock for damages, and cover legal costs, with amounts to be determined separately.

This judgment diverges from the previous German ruling which denied copyright protection to Birkenstock's sandals. Birkenstock plans to persist in defending its intellectual property, underlining its commitment to combat unauthorized imitations of its designs.
