Uncertainty surrounding tipping in Switzerland highlighted
Bank Cler, in collaboration with the ZHAW School of Management and Law, conducted a study on tipping habits in Switzerland. According to the results, more than 40% of Swiss people sometimes feel uncertain about how much to tip. This feeling is particularly pronounced among young adults and in non-traditional settings, such as food trucks.
In restaurants with table service, a tip of 5 to 10% of the bill is generally considered appropriate. However, many prefer to round up the amount. Furthermore, the study reveals that people are more generous with tips when paying in cash compared to digital payments.
In short, although tipping remains the norm in Switzerland, many people struggle to know what amount is appropriate in various situations. This study aims to clarify these customs.
