Family Support Crucial for International Assignments, Finds New AXA Study
A recent AXA Global Healthcare study highlights that family wellbeing significantly impacts the success of international assignments. The 2025 World of Work Report reveals that family-related challenges are major reasons for early termination of assignments. Despite basic support from employers, only 38% of families receive universal assistance, and many assignees are unaware of their benefits.
While family inclusion improves mental health for assignees, challenges persist, including employment issues for partners and family strain. Technology helps maintain connections for those apart, but separation impacts wellbeing. Employers often lack flexibility in benefits packages for family inclusion, according to the report.
Repatriation support is notably insufficient, with only 40% receiving psychological help post-assignment. Although promotions occur, personal adjustments lag. The study suggests a shift in success criteria for assignments, emphasizing family support, mental health, and cultural integration as key components of a sustainable mobility strategy.
