AMAG Austria Metall AG Secures Long-term Electricity Supply for Alouette Smelter
On July 4, 2025, AMAG Austria Metall AG announced a pivotal step towards securing a stable energy future for its venture, the Alouette smelter, by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The MoU involves key stakeholders: AMAG, the government of Québec, and Hydro-Québec, setting the framework for a new long-term electricity contract. This agreement is set to provide 1,085 MW of power from January 2030 to December 2045.
Electricity pricing under this deal will be linked to aluminium prices and the Midwest premium, facilitating a risk-sharing mechanism. This contract ensures that the Alouette smelter, the largest in the Americas with an annual capacity of over 620,000 tonnes, will continue to receive energy at competitive rates. With this agreement, Alouette commits to future investments aimed at sustainable and profitable growth.
