Air Liquide and Holcim Join Forces to Decarbonize Cement Production
Air Liquide and Holcim have signed an agreement to develop a carbon capture solution at Holcim’s near-zero cement plant in Obourg, Belgium. This partnership aims to advance Air Liquide's decarbonization efforts through the implementation of innovative carbon capture technologies, including the Cryocap™ OXY technology.
The project plans to capture 1.1 million tons of CO₂ per year. Captured CO₂ will be transported to a CO₂ Export Hub like Antwerp@C, and then to permanent offshore storage in the North Sea. This initiative is part of Holcim's GO4ZERO program, targeting carbon neutrality in Belgium by the decade's end.
The strategic agreement marks a significant milestone in transforming the Obourg plant into a large-scale near-zero facility. The Final Investment Decision (FID) depends on partnerships and public sector support, especially for regulatory infrastructure and derisking.
