Vienna Soil Dialogue Highlights Soil as Key Strategic Resource

AGRANA, a prominent food and industrial group, hosted the first Vienna Soil Dialogue. Collaborating with FAS Research, Österreichischer Raiffeisenverband, and IIASA, the conference centered on soil's critical role amid geopolitical challenges. The event emphasized soil as more than just an agricultural base but as a strategic asset crucial to Europe's sovereignty and stability.

Stephan Büttner, AGRANA's CEO, stressed the necessity of healthy soils for consistent agricultural output. He highlighted the importance of protecting soil productivity to ensure food security, especially during geopolitical disruptions. Erwin Hameseder, of the Austrian Raiffeisen Association, echoed this by linking soil health to Europe’s strategic strength.

The conference tackled issues like soil's impact on food sovereignty and the geopolitical dependencies on agricultural commodities. The need to focus on sustainable land use was underscored by Lower Austria's Governor, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, and Austria's Agriculture Minister, Norbert Totschnig. These insights aid in understanding the economic and strategic necessity of soil conservation.
