African Medicines Agency Celebrates First Year with Regulatory Initiatives
The African Medicines Agency (AMA) has commemorated its first operational year by launching new platforms aimed at enhancing regulatory capacity and supporting manufacturing in Africa. During the inaugural AMA Week, held in Kigali, Rwanda from October 25-30, 2026, regulators, manufacturers, and stakeholders convened to discuss improving access to safe medical products.
Key highlights included the inauguration of seven Technical Committees for scientific guidance and the launch of two hubs to boost regulatory expertise and manufacturing readiness. These efforts are part of AMA's strategy to streamline regulatory processes across the continent, harmonizing standards to avoid duplications while maintaining rigorous safety and efficacy criteria.
AMA's Director-General, Dr. Delese Mimi Darko, emphasized collaboration among national authorities to expedite quality product access. As AMA enters its second year, it focuses on deepening cooperation with national bodies and advancing its new hubs' initiatives to enhance patient safety and treatment availability across Africa.
